HMB (short for β-Hydroxy β-Methylbutyrate) is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine. Approximately 5% of dietary leucine is oxidized into HMB, and compared to leucine, HMB appears to be significantly more effective in reducing the rate of muscle protein breakdown gram for gram, but it is less effective than leucine in promoting muscle protein synthesis.
An increased intake of HMB reduces muscle cell membrane damage, acting against the catabolic hormone cortisol, thereby increasing anabolism. Its main function is to improve regeneration and enhance the utilization of dietary protein for muscle building. In addition, HMB has several positive effects, such as maintaining nitrogen balance, protecting and regenerating muscle mass, improving muscle mass and strength, reducing body fat, decreasing muscle breakdown due to physical stress, and even helping the body adapt to increased physical demands.
Effects of HMB:
- Stimulates muscle mass and strength gains
- Helps the body adapt to increased physical stress
- Protects muscle mass from destruction and breakdown
- Accelerates muscle regeneration and recovery
- Improves maintenance of positive nitrogen balance
- Enhances the body's immunity during periods of stress
- Reduces subcutaneous fat levels
