L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid, a building block of proteins, provided by protein intakes from various sources. It is essential because our body cannot synthesize it on its own; therefore, it must be obtained through food. It can be found in both plant and animal proteins. Tryptophan is extremely important for the human body because it is a component, or precursor, of serotonin. Serotonin has a calming and relaxing effect. Therefore, tryptophan itself plays a key role in maintaining and achieving mental health. It is used as a sleep aid and has a calming effect on the body.

Several studies have shown that L-tryptophan is used to improve serotonin levels, which play a role in depression, anxiety, appetite disorders, and mood disorders. Serotonin itself cannot cross the blood-brain barrier, so only supplementation with L-tryptophan or 5-hydroxytryptophan can affect increasing serotonin levels.
